Port de la Selva.
After Cadaqués it was nice to escape the tourists and come here. Certainly not as picturesque as Cadaqués but I liked the way the fishermen, who were clearly going about their business which wasn't the business of tourism, looked at us suspiciously, and the woman we bought our ice lollies from was very friendly.

Looking back at Port de la Selva. We eventually decided not to stay the night there because although it was charming in many ways we wanted to move on. Waking up in Figueres would make the next day easier and we felt we'd seen most of Port de la Selva in the hours we spent there. I was tempted to blow all our money on a tacky hotel with a jacuzzi but it didn't happen. Friday 22nd April 2005 18:38

Selva de Mar, 2km inland from Port de la Selva. We took a wrong turning then decided to explore this little village. It was very quiet, very old and very green. There were some interesting looking walks into the National Park that started here but we arrived rather late and were keen to set off for Figueres before it got dark so we didn't have enough time to explore properly.

Selva de Mar We considered staying here but there was only one little Pension in town which was shut because it was out of season. There were only about two shops/cafes in the place and they were also both shut. It would be nice to go back. Friday 22nd April 2005 18:55

Selva de Mar. Somebody's nicely chopped logs on their stone balcony overlooking the stream (which made a lovely sound).

Port de la Selva seen from the hills ascending towards the Monestir de Sant Pere de Rodes. It was a very stunning drive but unfortunately we didn't have time to stop at the Monestir itself at the top.

Getting higher. You can see the rocky area on the left that we explored a bit.

Stunning view from the other side of the mountain towards Roses. The photo doesn't reflect just how far the eye could see.

Figueres View from our hotel windows, the very comfortable and spacious Hotel Los Angeles. A very well chosen stop over - recommended.

The St. George's Day fair on the Rambla: St. George is the patron Saint of Catalonia. In Catalonia St. George's day coincides with the Fair of the Book and the Rose. On this day every man offers a rose to his loved one, and in return she gives him a book. The book is in memory of Cervantes. This custom was started in 1926, to commemorate Cervantes death. I didn't realise about the book aspect until I got back to the UK, so most of the next photos are of roses. I thought all the books were a weird Catalan language nationalist twist.
